The Critz Technique™ is in no way a chiropractic treatment or trigger point therapy. This
protocol is strictly soft tissue releases designed to restore balance to the musculoskeletal
system naturally utilizing Classic Muscle Energy Technique, Positional Release Therapy,
Myofascial Massage, and Cross Fiber Friction Massage. This nonabrasive approach to body
work is gentle on the client and will add years to the therapist's career. The assessment is
the most important part of this work. Therefore, this work requires strong assessment skills
taught in the Critz Technique™ class. These assessment skills will assist therapists in
making intelligent therapeutic decisions. One of the benefits of this work is that the client
does not have to remove any clothing. This is good news for the therapist because the
chronic pain clients who have clothing issues will more readily come to your table for
therapy.
The Critz Technique™ is all about zero pain. If the client’s pain increases during the release,
we stop and change our strategy. The therapists trained in the Critz Technique™ will have a
better understanding of musculoskeletal imbalances and how to correct them. Ultimately
most clients leave the table with zero pain. Learning the Critz Technique™ will enhance the
therapists opportunities to work in the medical, rehabilitative, and the athletic fields.
Muscle Energy Technique (MET) was developed by Fred Mitchell, Sr., D.O. and presented in
the book An Evaluation and Treatment Manual of Osteopathic Muscle Energy Procedures
(1979). The therapist practicing muscle energy assesses areas of somatic dysfunction,
then passively positions the client/patient at the restricted (direct) motion barrier. While the
therapist holds the client/patient in this position, the client/patient exerts gentle force away
from the restricted barrier, which the therapist resists. The client/patient is then told to relax
and the therapist gently moves the client/patient through the restricted barrier. This
procedure is repeated several times. This process resets the resting length of shortened
muscle, thus improving range of motion.
Positional Release Technique (PRT) or strain-counterstrain is a technique of reducing
tender points in the soft tissues by passively placing the patient in a position where light
digital pressure on the tender point is no longer painful, and then holding that position for
approximately 90 seconds. After 90 seconds, the muscles being addressed are slowly
returned to neutral and re-examined (range-of-motion/palpation) for improvement. Common
problems such as twisted or tilted pelvis, rotator cuff syndrome, sciatica, whiplash and
thoracic outlet syndrome are treated through gentle repositioning, cradling and supporting
the body to 'unwind' from it's neurological memory.
MET and PRT are the primary techniques used in the Critz Technique™. Through the years
Michael has learned that certain muscle groups tend to release better with MET whereas
other muscle groups tend to release better with PRT. The marriage of these two techniques
are perfect for erasing chronic pain conditions no matter if the client has been in pain 20 or
more years or has had fusion surgery. The Critz Technique™ is safe and gentle on the client
and the therapist. Most therapists who learn the Critz Technique™ protocol have immediate
success going straight to the cause of the chronic pain condition, and success in assisting
their clients in becoming pain free. Our ultimate goal is to achieve a place of ZERO PAIN.
